Top 7 Backsplash Trends of 2022

Trends are always changing and everyone is always claiming one trend is a hotter one than the other. We have compiled some of our favorite trends of this year with pictures to show you our favorite designs within that trend. We are excited to see what the rest of the year has to show us and are always looking for the next project to bring fun and joy into our archive. Do you have any particular trends you have seen in the new homes going up in our area? We would love to see them.

Not the standard 3x6 subway backsplash

1. Not the standard 3x6 subway tile

Who doesn’t love the standard 3×6 subway backsplash trends! They have been around for as long as I remember, as well as have changed in color from pink to turquoise to taupe to standard white but remained the same size. Surprisingly or not, these are still a major hit. Maybe not the turquoise or pink as much as others but we certainly know that we have installed many of the standard 3×6 that we used to replace with intricate detailed ones or larger format over the years. The difference we have seen in the last couple of years is various different patterns and size of subway tile. Still all installed in the same fashion as before but giving them a whole different appearance. All from diamond shaped 3×12 to beveled edge 4×12 and many others in between!

Full height backsplash

2. Full height backsplash

Often that standard 18” under cabinet design may not be enough to gain that glamorous wow factor in kitchens. With many floating shelfs or those simple windows above the sink one can be left wondering where to start and where to end the backsplash, what about running it all way to the ceiling? This give us the appearance of a longer kitchen as well as a fully thought out design with even a factor of full glam.

Pop of Color Backsplash

3. Pop of Color

White kitchens were the major design for years, with this trend slowly fading into the distance we are seeing lots of colors showing back up. It always take the Midwest a little longer to pick up on these trends but this year we do not seem so far behind with that said we are excited to see what beautiful design homeowners and designers come up with. So far we have seen blues, reds and greens with mixtures of matte and polished designs. If you were going bold which color would you select in your kitchen?

Porcelain Slab Backsplash Material

4. Porcelain Slabs – backsplash without grout lines

One of the newest backsplash trends to hit the Midwest market are the porcelain slabs, they are fabricated just like your countertops would be which makes them the perfect alternative if you are already in the market for new countertops. They are everlasting and a much better option than doing a full granite or marble backsplash unless of course you have a glamorous color in mind. The porcelain slabs are also popular in showers, see our blog about those HERE.

Full Intricate/Bold Patterns

5. Full Intricate/Bold Patterns

Ever thought of the boldest backsplash trends? These are definitely for those wanting to have their backsplash be the center of attention in the kitchen. I personally love this look, its bold and the ultimate statement piece. Maybe you remodeled your home in the white kitchen era and are now ready to retire this muted look by giving it an upgrade without redoing the whole area. Instead this may be the way to go for you. This will certainly give you the upgrade without starting over from scratch.

6. Detailed Pattern Sections

Not ready for the fully bold backsplash trends? How about upgrading the space above your stove with a super exotic pattern and a hood that will allow this pattern to go up to the top of your cabinets. Breaking up the kitchen in this way is simple yet elegant, it is always nice to have one focal place for our eyes to land when we enter a space. In this case it be just that space above your stove, or if that doesn’t work for you perhaps you have some room above your sink or maybe even a dry bar area in your kitchen that could be the center of space.

7. Full Granite/Marble Backsplash

We finish with the most extravagant backsplash trends of them all, full granite or marble backsplash! This is truly everlasting. Selecting a specific piece of granite or marble for the countertops can be a once in a lifetime experience and so why not extend it to the backsplash? Since 2001 we have never removed this type of design and it has stayed relevant to this day. This year in particular we have installed more of these than we can think of the years prior. What is not to love about these backsplash trends, if done right with cabinets and flooring, which by the way can be easier to upgrade than ever even thinking of replacing a special duo of granite or marble countertop and backsplash. We love it and so do homeowners. We know the sales pitch of selling a home is stating that the kitchen is freshly remodeled and luxurious; granite will definitely surpass our lifetimes and still stay as classy looking and durable as day one!
