Tile shower vs. porcelain shower panels.

To fully grasp the process of upgrading your shower into that beautiful master piece you have seen on HGTV or Instagram, it is essential to know all your options from tile showers to porcelain shower panels. I am writing this article to give you some insight, that way you are not left wondering where to go and how to achieve it. As we all know, they all serve the main purpose, to give you a space to keep your hygiene in order as well as giving you that glamourous look that you are going for hence why you are shopping for a new shower to begin with.

Here are some of the main things to consider while you are looking at upgrading your shower to any of the luxury products such as Porcelain Shower Panels, Tile showers.

First is first: Waterproofing

Tile Shower remodel

Fortunately and unfortunately we are unable to have a shower without waterproofing, no matter what product you choose. They all will require some type of waterproofing to guarantee that you do not damage your entire home from simply taking a shower. Fortunately there are several options of Waterproofing one can choose before any work is done on your shower.

Poured Shower Pan vs. Prefabricated

The two options we have for waterproofing would be a concrete poured shower pan or a prefabricated one. Both of them have their pros and cons of course. This will mainly depend on the kind of shower design you are going with as well as how good your shower installer is (are). Tile showers have intricate patterns on the floor which will generally require a poured pan, the reason being is simple, your shower may be of custom size and a prefabricated pan may not be readily available (often you can get them custom ordered as with anything else but delivery may take longer than ordering the tile themselves). A poured pan is either a quick concrete mix or a custom formula using portland cement and river rock. I know, it’s a lot of detailed that may be useless but could also be beneficial if someone is selling you something and they don’t know what they are talking about.

Prefabricated pans on the other hand will be a simpler solution in many cases. This does not mean simpler is always the way to go. Prefabricated pans will need a simple hook up from a plumber and you are ready to install your porcelain shower panels or tile right on top of it. No drying time and no detailed designs on the floor.  However, there are prefabricated shower panels on the market that allow you the ability to install tile on them as well. They have a slop and so will your poured shower pan, it may be that much easier for your installer to adhere the tile to a perfectly slopped floor than a custom built one.

However you make the decision from one or another, consider your design and highly consider the integrity of your installer. One small mistake can give you a major headache and a huge insurance claim. I don’t think anyone want to deal with that while their main goal is to have a luxury shower that they can enjoy!

The holy grail of luxury showers: TILE!

Luxury Tile Shower

We all know tile and we have all found love them. Their beautiful endless design options and the longevity of a professionally installed tile shower can give you that exact luxury look you are going. This said and being someone who has been in this industry for a very long time I can say that tile showers have their ups and down. Grout is one of the major issues as well as joints on complex designs. Quality Marble and Tile has done thousands of residential projects and maybe even more so of commercial tile showers. Such as, Currier Hall in Iowa City and the Children’s hospital only to name a few. That said we know our showers. I will say that my personal experiences that of love and hate. The grout joint love to turn yellow/orange from our lovely water here in Iowa. This is unavoidable and will require you to scribe it occasionally. Though this may not be a reason to stay away from them, the industry has given us a wonderful solution!

Here comes the Porcelain Shower Panels!

Porcelain Shower Panel

Porcelain shower panels are made out of the same material as our beloved tile only in a much larger format, with this noted, this allows us to eliminate one of the major issues that we have with tile showers, the grout! Porcelain shower panels give you a full solid look and have many options for designs as well as tile showers. They are fabricated more like a granite countertop rather than installed piece by piece such as tile showers. With them being fabricated in this way, this allows us to make precise cut outs for all your fixtures as well as adding any shampoo shelves or other accessories you may want in your luxury shower! Maintenance with porcelain shower panels is also less of a hassle than is that of tile shower, reason being is again, the grout, all it will take is a handy squeegee and you are good to go after your daily shower. Leaving your new luxury bathroom spotless and clean without a worry. We work closely with Sunderlands and Midwest to provide you options on colors and thickness size for these porcelain shower panels.

Cost:

One may always assume that cost may be higher for a new product that is that of something that has been around for as long as I have been alive. (33 years last time I checked. Lol) This is not the case and will solely depend on the design you go with and your installers’ integrity. Remember that there are so many option of tile on the market and one can get as detailed as possible. We always recommend getting a few estimates and I hope that everyone takes this into consideration and ask as many questions as you can. This will ensure that you get exactly what you want with the most reasonable market cost available. We have done many shower projects and over the years it has always depended on personal preference. Sometimes with major remodeling there are other factors so be sure to educate yourself that way you are not overly surprised with any of the situations that may arise during your tile shower or porcelain shower panel project.
