Design With Tile For Your Backsplash

We all know how many tile options there are. Walk through your basic hardware store and we guarantee you will see many options. Big tile, small tile, ceramic, porcelain, glass or mosaic. The options are really endless. This is why having some help with design can do wonders. Another tip is to look online for some ideas you can present to whoever is helping you. This will narrow down your search so you are not wondering in the abyss of tile at your local tile store. Over the course of the years we have designed hundreds of tile backsplash. As well as installed if not more than that. What is the process of installation you may wonder.

Difference In Backsplash Material

Porcelain: These tile are a better quality than what we call ceramic. This is because their colors are generally baked all the way through. Porcelain is used more for flooring and areas that take more beating than the standard backsplash.

Ceramic: A perfect choice for backsplash without breaking the bank. Most subway tile are ceramic, with a nice coat on top of the backed tile they will give you a sharp look.

Glass: Glass is a perfect way to elevate a standard backsplash. It can add its own challenge on cutting and finishing the edges as bullnose may not always be available. But they give a look unique to that of the porcelain and ceramic tile. Generally also more expensive than the other two.

Mosaics: What is to say for mosaics, elegant and beautiful and can sometimes feel super busy. This may be why they are used as a feature design rather than the whole backsplash in appropriate application. They can also be expansive so using them sparingly will help with budget.

Natural Stone: Travertine and slate tiles are used commonly in backsplash installation. They are everlasting if installed and maintained properly. Their design is filled with flaws, pits and areas that look rough but this is also what gives it the natural look. Depending on their quality, they may be either more or less expensive than any of the other options.

Installation Of Your New Backsplash

Backsplash has intricate detail that have to be seen prior to install. Such as decorative pieces and how the two will fit together. Finish edges on the ends of the wall, are you using bullnose or schluter? How high you may want to go on the feature wall? Down to what kind of adhesive needs to be used, mastic or thinset? What kind of grout will you use? All these should be considered. These questions can be answered with an installer that knows what they are doing. After all, it may seem that DIY tile is a simple solution until your backsplash design gets fancy. Often even doing subway tile can be a challenge as they come in variety of sizes and installation methods. As your installer all the proper questions prior to settling. It will help your project along.
