European Farmhouse Style vs. American Farmhouse Style

I was speaking with Dina and we were bouncing ideas around for our next blog I am excited to report we will be discussing the interior design style of European Farmhouse and what sets it aside from the American style we all know here. I fell in love with this design aesthetic when I was able to visit a museum in Kansas City. In the middle of the museum, it felt like you were transported to Europe. I looked around at all the bricks on the walls and on the floors. The stone fountain that looked like it could be centuries old was placed in the center of this courtyard. The columns that were replicated were limestone. Around this museum I saw many granite and limestone pieces I thought I could have only imagined. Yet, this day I got to see extraordinary pieces for myself!!

American Farmhouse Style

When I first saw this design I recognized many features that set this particular style apart. For instance, the tones of all the colors – between the paint and stone are very calming. The color palette that is utilized in this style is earthy tones. When you use earthy tones it creates a very calming environment to be in. Not only does it create a pleasant environment, it makes for a beautiful space. The mixture of cream tones with blue and or green sets the tone for your space.

Another common thing you will see in this type of home is metal. You will see it on windows and furniture pieces. Why do you see them placed out strategically is so that it adds character and makes the space feel vintage and homey all at the same time. To paint the picture for you of what this looks like are “craftsmen-made metal chairs” that are part of the vintage inspiration. As well as the metal design to add character to the windows. Then periodically using a dark-washed metal bookcase or bed frame. Paying attention to the placement of these pieces makes everything feel cohesive and that it is in touch with its character.

My favorite part about this style of design is the application of exposed wood- for beams and framing. It helps bring character into the spaces and tie all of the different elements together. Depending on what wood you are using sets the warmth and lighting of your home. For example, if you use lighter wood that wood will capture the light and act as an ambient light fixture. The darker wood will cut the lighting and help create unique spaces and you will not have that flow of light coming through.

European Farmhouse Style

Now to transition into what is different about European vs. American Farmhouse styles. The biggest difference between the two is American Farmhouse has moved more towards a modern minimalist aesthetic. Whereas the European Farmhouse is filled with character by the warmth of the colors and layering of details. The style of American Farmhouse normally has a lot of brighter more vibrant colors other than the European look.

Now to add to the differences between these two styles we have to imagine we are at the front of the home. First is the basic architectural differences from the outside. American homes nowadays have siding or painted brick whereas the European style utilizes brick and stone. I will talk about this a little more in-depth in the next passage. Not only are there architectural differences on the outside but arch-ways in the American style are squared off whereas the European style has curved entrances in their arch-ways.

European Farmhouse Style

European style doesn’t take away from the integrity and beauty of the product they are using.  I don’t know if you know this but whenever you are utilizing stone whether that be using it outside on your fireplace etc. Most of the time the pieces come in and there is no right way of putting the pieces together the contractors will take hours on end to figure out the best layout if need be. It is truly an art and something that I value so much in these styles of homes we have been talking about today.

In conclusion, I loved being able to speak to you about this design and show you the differences between both styles. Of course, this may be something I can write forever about because I love this style and these products. Hopefully, this interested you as well and as always if you have any questions we are one call away for any of your design questions!
