How to pick the best backsplash material

Having options for designing the perfect backsplash is a wonderful thing! Until…. its to many options! We want to give you all the details you may need to help you make the best decision while selecting the best backsplash material for  your project!

Not the standard 3x6 subway backsplash

1. Ceramic

Ceramic tile have been around for a long time! Back to the times when they were hand made, glazed and painted to be the most detailed pieces. Those are still available. Ceramic tile are baked at lower temperatures than that of some of the other materials. With this noted, they are more prone to water absorption. And hence, making them one of the most cost effective backsplash material.

2. Porcelain

Porcelain are an excellent material for any tile application. They are baked at a higher temperature which means they can be installed as flooring or any covering. Now a days you will see porcelain tile used as the prime material for commercial projects. With them being baked at a higher temperature they absorb less water and their color is generally seen through the whole body of the tile. Meaning if you chip it on accident you will see the same color patterns in the chip as well. Unlike that of the ceramic which has the glaze over the body. This is an excellent backsplash material!

3. Glass

Glass is a perfect way to elevate a standard backsplash. It can add its own challenge on cutting and finishing the edges as bullnose may not always be available. But they give a look unique to that of the porcelain and ceramic tile. Generally also more expensive than the other two options this is why it is used as accents. All though we have installed full backsplashes using glass and its always a beautiful result is the glass is good quality.

Mosaic Backsplash Material

4. Mosaic

What is to say for mosaics, elegant and beautiful and can sometimes feel super busy. This may be why they are used as a feature design rather than the whole backsplash in appropriate application. They can also be expansive so using them sparingly will help with budget. Mosaics tend to be a blend of various materials including but not limited to: glass, porcelain, ceramics, natural stone, even metals. Mosaics are great to add the perfect backsplash material to add flare to your kitchen. Use it above the stove or on the full height area in your kitchen to give it some pop.

5. Natural Stone

Travertine and slate tiles are  commonly used as a backsplash material. They are everlasting if installed and maintained properly. Their design is filled with flaws, pits and areas that look rough but this is also what gives it the natural look. Depending on their quality, they may be either more or less expensive than any of the other backsplash material options. They may not be the most popular option in the design world currently but they always find a way back on the trend wagon.

P.S. Don’t shy away from full granite backsplashes either, though they are probably the most expensive, they are also a natural stone option. And they serve as a complete kitchen set up. You can see it in the picture. This one does not always apply to a standard tile backsplash just because it is fabricated like a countertop rather than a standard backsplash. But it certainly is a great option for backsplash material.
